Clare & George Campbell

We are Clare (46) and George (11) Campbell and we live in North Devon. Clare works in Cancer Research and George goes to the local school and enjoys playing rugby and football.

What has been your journey so far?

George’s dad, David, died of brain cancer in May 2021 and David’s most favourite person was Bear Grylls. David read Bear’s Soul Fuel book every day and often sent it round to our church group for inspiration. We booked Gone Wild as David really wanted to meet Bear but David died before the festival, so we met him instead! It was a really special day for Family Campbell and very emotional to meet David’s hero J.

What have been the biggest obstacles you have encountered?

We really tried to keep a normal life whilst David was ill by keeping active and enjoying the simple pleasures in life – family and friends were a really important part of that. David had the brain cancer all of George’s life so we were really lucky that David lived to see George grow up. We try not to look at obstacles because life will always throw different things at you…how you adapt is the important thing.

Who inspired you to find courage and determination in the tough times?

We are lucky to have a large group of very supportive friends and family. Our faith also helps us…always. People want to help, to be part of the team and it is really important to let them. We have received so much love and support it’s been amazing.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you so far?

Treat every day as the special gift it is….and tell people you love them and that you are there for them.

What is your dream adventure?

We have two…To sleep under the stars by a log fire…we keep talking about it but not quite got there yet! To explore the Amazon. Perhaps we could do both at the same time J
