We
were exhausted by last night and really keen for a |
| proper
night sleep but we were up late looking at the detailed military
weather forecasting and it soon became apparent, painful as it
was to see as we were so tired, that we needed to refuel and leave
as soon as we could tomorrow i.e. today. The Denmark Straight
between Greenland and Iceland has a force 3 weather pattern for
the next 48 hours which is as good as the weather is ever going
to get. We were up early at 6am, refuelling packing and clearing
customs and are getting ready to leave this beautiful bit of heaven.
Initially we will be travelling through the stunning Greenland
fjords flanked by mountains and glaciers. This will be the calm
before we set out in to the open sea for the 650 mile leg of water
across to Iceland. We are aware the weather will be deteriorating
rapidly and by Friday evening gales will follow this. We will
need to be well in port by this stage but it seems that this is
the right decision that we make use of this window now. |
| I
want to just genuinely at this point and say a few thank you's
to kit sponsors - this is not a plug but a genuine thank you now
that we have seen this kit in action and have seen this kit save
our lives - the first is to Finnings Caterpillar and MIT Twin
Disc - the engine system on the boat took a hell of a pounding
and so far hasn't even missed a beat, we listen nervously to this
as the boat crashes off waves. Secondly Simrad - without these
electronics moving through the ice up here would be a very different
ball game. The Musto clothing and Gecko helmets show all the hallmarks
of having been tested to the limits and it shows. And the Marine
Track tracker has become a huge part of this challenge allowing
coastguards and families to keep a close eye on us. And finally
Ocean Dynamics I am ringing the RNLI when we get home to tell
them that this is the only boat they should ever be using! |
We
will do one final weather check on the east coast of Greenland
as we leave the fjords. We feel fired up again and getting ready
to leave. Thank you to so many of you for all your support, we
are really feeling it especially during the coldest of nights.

Finally
the Danish Navy for all their help, support and good will. |
